Is Walking Good for Knee and Hip Arthritis?

Yes, for most people. What the research says about walking with knee or hip arthritis, how much to do, which shoes help, and what soreness is normal.

The short version
  1. Australian GP guidelines strongly recommend walking for knee osteoarthritis, and exercise in general for hip osteoarthritis.
  2. In a large study of people over 50 with knee arthritis, those who walked for exercise were less likely to develop frequent knee pain over the following four years.
  3. Some discomfort while you walk is normal. As a rule of thumb, it is fine if it settles within 24 hours.
