What is Pilates and which Class is Right for Me?

Pilates is definitely a buzz word and has certainly exploded over the past 10 years, but just what is it all about and which class is right for you?

The Origins of Pilates

Pilates was created almost one hundred years ago by Joseph Pilates (it was originally called Contrology). 

Joseph Pilates explained that the inspiration for the creation of Pilates came about whilst he was in an internment camp during World War 1 after he came to believe that the ailments of modern life came from a lack of exercise. Some of his first students were injured soldiers in the internment camp.

Starting originally with body weight or Mat Pilates exercises he then created a range of new equipment to help accelerate the process of strengthening, stretching, alignment and core strength. The mostly popular machine used today, The Reformer, was originally called the The Universal Reformer as it was designed to universally reform the body. Other pieces of equipment included the Cadillac and Wunda chair which we use at All for One in our Clinical Pilates and Prenatal Pilates classes.

Which Pilates class is right for me?

At All for One we offer Pilates classes that are suitable for all levels:

Pilates Fundamentals

This is a great class if you have never done Reformer Pilates before or have not exercised for a while. Working in a small group you’ll be taught how to use the Reformer, run through a range of different exercises and learn all the safety information you need. All this while still getting a good workout!

Level One Reformer Pilates

Our Level One Reformer Pilates are great for people of all levels of fitness. Working in class of max. 10 people you will not be lost in the crowd as you complete a full body workout and that will leave you feeling stronger and walking taller. Variations of difficulty are provided to cater for different strength levels.

Level Two Reformer Pilates

If you are looking for an extra challenge after completing some Level One Reformer Pilates classes then the Level Two classes are for you. Requiring a higher level of fitness and experience in Pilates these classes will push you to your limits

Clinical Pilates

These classes are perfect if you have a pain, injury or are needing a more individualised approach. These classes are capped at a maximum of 4 people per class with everyone being provided with an individual program focusing on their exact needs. Our Clinical Pilates classes are run by our Physiotherapists so you know you are in the best hands.

Prenatal Pilates

Pilates is a fantastic low impact form of exercise that can be safely completed throughout your whole pregnancy. These classes an excellent way to work on pelvic floor strength, pelvic pain, back pain or just general exercise and fitness throughout pregnancy. Our Prenatal Pilates classes are kept to a maximum of 5 and all taken by Physiotherapists.
