Pregnancy Physiotherapy

The things you've been putting up with, taken seriously.

Growing a person is hard physical work. This is where you get looked after. First things first: congratulations. Now, about your body. The pelvis that clicks when you roll over in bed. The back that’s done by 4pm. The sciatica, the rib ache, the pelvic floor questions you’re not sure who to ask. Our women’s health physiotherapists treat all of it, safely, in every trimester, and your appointment runs a full hour so nothing gets rushed.

“It’s just pregnancy” is only half true

Aches are common in pregnancy. Suffering through them isn’t compulsory. Pelvic girdle pain, back and hip pain, sciatica and rib pain all have well-established physio treatments that are safe for you and your baby, and the earlier they’re treated, the more comfortable the months ahead become.

You don’t have to earn the appointment with a certain level of pain, and you don’t have to wait until after the birth to feel better. Nine months is a long time to put up with something we can treat.

Asked in this room every week

“Is physio safe while I’m pregnant?”

Yes, all the way through, from the first trimester to the last week. Everything about your treatment is adapted to your stage: positioning, techniques, exercise. Our women’s health physios do this every day, and they’ll explain what they’re doing and why as they go.

“Isn’t this pain just part of being pregnant?”

Some discomfort is. Pain that changes how you walk, sleep, work or pick up your toddler is worth treating, and usually responds well. You don’t need to know which kind yours is; that’s what the assessment is for.

“Can you actually help me prepare for the birth?”

Yes, and it has its own appointment. From 34 weeks, our Birth Preparation session is a one-on-one hour with a women’s health physio, and it’s built to be practical: active birth techniques for early labour, perineal massage education, pushing strategies for second stage (including positions that work with an epidural), and recovery tips for both vaginal and caesarean births. Bring your partner; we’ll give them the tools to actually help you on the day. Many women tell us it was the most useful hour of their pregnancy.

“What should I do about exercise?”

Keep moving; it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself and your baby. And the best room to do it in is Prenatal Pilates, because ours was built for exactly where you are: taught by the same physiotherapists who run these appointments, capped at four so your physio adjusts every exercise to your body and your week, and safe from your first trimester to your last. You’ll build the strength that pregnancy, birth and the newborn months are about to ask of you, in a room of women counting down alongside you. Already training elsewhere? We’ll tell you what to adjust and when.

What we help with

Through every trimester

Pelvic girdle pain and pubic symphysis pain. Lower back and hip pain. Sciatica. Rib pain and upper back tension. Carpal tunnel and swelling-related pain. Abdominal muscle separation as your bump grows. Compression garment prescription and fitting.

Your pelvic floor, before it’s tested

Pelvic floor assessment and training through pregnancy, incontinence treatment, and preparation for birth: perineal preparation, labour positions, and a pelvic floor that knows how to push and how to recover. Assessment can use real-time ultrasound; internal assessment only ever happens with your consent.

Getting ready for the birth

Our Birth Preparation session, recommended from 34 weeks: active birth techniques for early labour, perineal massage education, pushing strategies for second stage (including with an epidural), and tailored recovery tips for both vaginal and caesarean births. Partners are warmly encouraged to join, and they leave with a job description for the day.

The rest of you

Pregnancy massage with our qualified therapists for the weeks when everything aches, and physio for the ordinary injuries that don’t pause for pregnancy: the neck, the knee, the ankle you rolled. Same team, one picture of you.

A full hour, at your pace

It starts with your story. Your pregnancy, your symptoms, your work and your other kids, and what you want the next months to feel like.

A careful assessment, matched to your stage. Explained in plain English as it happens, with nothing assumed and nothing rushed.

Treatment starts the same visit. You’ll leave with a written plan for the weeks ahead, adjusted as your pregnancy progresses.

A physio who knows where you’re up to. The same physiotherapist follows your pregnancy, so every visit picks up exactly where the last one ended.

And then the months after, too

This is the part women tell us they wish they’d found sooner. Your pregnancy physio, your Prenatal Pilates teacher and your pregnancy massage therapist work under one roof, from one picture of you. The physio who treats your pelvic girdle pain teaches the Tuesday class you train in.

And after the birth, nothing resets: your Postnatal Check happens with a team that already knows your whole story, postnatal physiotherapy picks up from there, and Mums and Bubs is down the same hall, babies welcome. From the first trimester to the pram years, you’ll never have to start over or retell it.

Frequently asked questions

Is physiotherapy safe during pregnancy?

Yes, in every trimester. Treatment, positioning and exercise are all adapted to your stage of pregnancy, and our women’s health physiotherapists treat pregnant women every day.

When should I see a physio during pregnancy?

As soon as anything hurts or changes how you move, and ideally before: many women book early in the second trimester to assess their pelvic floor and stay ahead of common pains. Third-trimester birth preparation consults are also popular.

Can physio help with pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy?

Yes. Pelvic girdle pain is one of the most common things we treat, with hands-on treatment, activity modifications, exercise and sometimes compression garments. Most women improve significantly with the right management.

Can a physio help me prepare for birth?

Yes. Our Birth Preparation session, recommended from 34 weeks, is a one-on-one hour with a women’s health physiotherapist covering active birth techniques for early labour, perineal massage education, pushing strategies (including with an epidural), and recovery for both vaginal and caesarean births. Partners are warmly encouraged to join.

What happens in a pregnancy physio appointment?

A full hour with a women’s health physiotherapist: your story, a careful assessment matched to your trimester, treatment the same visit, and a written plan. Internal assessment is never required and only ever happens with your consent.

Do I need a referral, and can I claim it?

No referral needed. Private health extras rebates are claimed on the spot with HICAPS, and Medicare Care Plans are welcome.
