Why See a Physiotherapist After Giving Birth?

Postnatal physiotherapy isn’t only for women experiencing pain or complications—it’s for every mum who wants to recover well, reconnect with their body, and return to movement safely.

During pregnancy and birth, your body undergoes significant changes:

  • The pelvic floor is placed under pressure

  • The abdominal wall stretches (sometimes separating, known as diastasis recti)

  • Posture, joint stability and movement patterns all adapt

  • You may have undergone a caesarean section or experienced perineal tearing

  • Feeding, lifting, and disrupted sleep often cause neck, back and shoulder pain

Without proper care, these changes can lead to ongoing issues like incontinence, prolapse, unresolved abdominal separation, or chronic pain. But with early physiotherapy intervention, many of these issues can be resolved—or avoided altogether.

Common Reasons Women Seek Postnatal Physio

  • Pelvic floor weakness or dysfunction

  • Abdominal separation (diastasis recti)

  • Urinary leakage or urgency

  • Pelvic pain or heaviness

  • Pain with intimacy

  • Caesarean or perineal scar management

  • Hip, back or neck pain from feeding or lifting

  • Uncertainty about returning to exercise

  • Desire for a full postnatal check-up

Our Women’s Health Physiotherapists work with you to assess, treat and guide you based on your specific experience and goals.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your initial consult is 100% focused on you. We’ll start with a comprehensive history—your pregnancy, birth, and any symptoms you’re experiencing now. You’ll never be rushed, and we’ll explain everything we do along the way.

We may assess:

  • Pelvic floor function

  • Abdominal wall and core strength

  • Posture, breathing and movement patterns

  • Areas of tightness, pain or imbalance

  • Surgical scars or healing concerns

From there, you’ll receive a tailored recovery plan. That might include pelvic floor exercises, core retraining, hands-on treatment, or progressing into Clinical Pilates or Mums & Bubs Pilates when you’re ready.

When Should You See a Postnatal Physio?

There’s no strict timeline—you can come in as soon as 2 weeks postpartum, or even years later if you’re still dealing with unresolved symptoms. The earlier, the better, but it’s never too late to start caring for your postnatal body.

We recommend booking a comprehensive postnatal assessment at around 6 weeks postpartum, once you’ve had your standard check-up with your GP or obstetrician.

What About Exercise After Birth?

We know that many new mums are keen to “get back to exercise”—but the truth is, returning to movement requires the right kind of support. That’s where our Clinical Pilates and Mums & Bubs Pilates classes come in.

Led by our physiotherapists, these classes are designed to:

  • Rebuild your core and pelvic floor safely

  • Improve posture and balance

  • Ease tension and reconnect with your body

  • Gradually return to full-body strength

Our Mums & Bubs Pilates sessions are relaxed and welcoming—babies are welcome to come along, and class sizes are small so we can keep it all personal and supportive.
