Sound familiar?
You sleep on one side now, because the other one complains. The first few steps out of bed have a limp you walk off before anyone sees. Stairs get a hand on the rail, long walks get cut short, and sitting through a movie means shifting in your seat by the second act. You’ve stretched it, rested it, maybe rolled a spiky ball around on it. It keeps coming back, because nothing you’ve tried was aimed at what’s actually wrong.
What’s going on
Pain on the outside of your hip is usually a different problem from pain in the groin, which is different again from pain that’s actually coming from your lower back and only visiting the hip. Gluteal tendinopathy, bursitis, joint irritation, referred pain: they can feel almost identical, and each one needs a different fix. That’s why the guessing hasn’t worked, and it’s why a proper assessment changes everything.
The tendons on the outside of your hip behave differently under load, so we test them working: single-leg tasks, resisted movements, the positions that bother you at night. If they’re the culprit, they’ll tell us here.
The hip joint itself has its own signature: where it pinches, how it moves through range, what it does under compression. We test the joint directly rather than assuming.
Lower backs refer pain to hips constantly, and treating the hip for a back problem is why some hip pain never resolves. We screen your back every time, so the plan aims at the true source.
You’ll know which answer is yours before you leave the first appointment, explained in plain English, with treatment already started.
Hands-on manual therapy to calm the pain and get you sleeping and walking again, with the first changes usually starting from visit one.
Clinical Pilates with a physio: small, precise, programmed for your exact hip, building the strength that stops this coming back.
When you’re ready, your rehab graduates down the hall into our studio classes, reformer, strength, and others, so the result has somewhere to live for the long term. The goal was never endless appointments. It’s a hip that doesn’t need us.

The most common cause is gluteal tendinopathy, an irritation of the tendons on the outside of the hip, which often flares with hormonal changes through menopause. Bursitis, osteoarthritis and pain referred from the lower back are also common. Assessment matters because each needs different treatment.
Side-lying compresses the tendons and bursa on the outside of the hip, which is why night pain is a hallmark of gluteal tendinopathy and bursitis. A physio can confirm the cause and give you positions and a program that settle it.
Most hip conditions respond better to the right kind of movement than to rest. Complete rest often makes tendons more sensitive. Your physio will show you what to keep doing and what to pause, so you’re not guessing.
A conversation about your story, then an assessment that answers three questions: is it the tendons, is it the joint, or is your back the real source. Hands-on treatment starts the same visit, and you leave with a written plan. Appointments are one-on-one in a private room.
