**Mastitis Treatment That Works: What Every Mum Needs to Know**

If you’re in pain, feeling run-down, or worried about mastitis while breastfeeding, you’re not alone—and you’re in the right place. At All for One, we offer evidence-based, compassionate **mastitis treatment** to help you recover quickly, reduce inflammation, and feel supported.

Mastitis is one of the most common reasons new mums seek help in those early weeks postpartum. It can come on suddenly and feel overwhelming—but the good news is, with the right treatment at the right time, you can avoid complications and feel better fast.

### What Is Mastitis?

Mastitis isn’t just a blocked duct. Thanks to recent research from the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM), we now understand mastitis as a **spectrum of inflammatory conditions**, not always caused by infection. In many cases, mastitis starts with inflammation, often triggered by oversupply (hyperlactation), stress, or an imbalance of bacteria in the breast.

**Early mastitis symptoms may include:**

Breast pain, redness or swelling

A firm or hot area on the breast

Flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, body aches)

Fatigue, irritability or feeling “off”

Pain or burning during or after feeding

If this sounds like what you’re going through, **you don’t need to wait**—book a session with one of our Women’s Health Physiotherapists for immediate, hands-on support.

### What Causes Mastitis?

You may be surprised to learn that common habits or devices can contribute to mastitis risk, such as:

Pumping too often or to “empty” the breast

Overuse of Haakaa or Epsom salt soaks

Heat packs or firm massage

Poor-fitting bras that restrict lymph flow

Stress, fatigue or perinatal mood challenges

Oversupply, weaning suddenly, or skipping feeds can all create a backup in the breast—what we now understand as **breast congestion**, not just a “clogged duct.”

### How We Treat Mastitis at All for One

Our team of **Women’s Health Physiotherapists** is trained in the latest mastitis care. When you come to us, here’s what your treatment may include:

**Therapeutic ultrasound** to target inflammation and clear congestion

**Lymphatic drainage massage** (gentle, sweeping technique toward the armpit)

Breast assessment and support with feeding positions

**Realistic recovery planning** with time to rest and recover

Referral to your GP if bacterial mastitis or antibiotics are required

If you need extra support, we work closely with trusted **Lactation Consultants** and can connect you with one near you.

### What to Do at Home

If you suspect mastitis, here’s what helps:
✅ Apply cold packs or a frozen nappy to reduce inflammation
✅ Rest and hydrate—your body needs a break
✅ Continue feeding or expressing from both breasts, especially the affected side
✅ Wear a supportive, non-restrictive bra (we love Brava Lingerie, She Science, and Dickory Dock)

❌ Avoid heat, Epsom salt soaks, castor oil, or vibrating massagers
❌ Don’t try to “unblock” with firm massage
❌ Skip nipple shields or extra pumping unless advised by a professional
