## What is mastitis?

Mastitis is best understood as a **spectrum of inflammatory breast conditions**. It doesn’t always involve infection. Often it begins with inflammation and congestion, which can be made worse by oversupply, stress, tight clothing or unhelpful techniques.

### Common symptoms

- Breast pain, heat, redness or swelling
- A firm, tender or hot area in the breast
- Burning pain during or after feeds
- Body aches, fatigue, or feeling generally unwell

Early treatment helps you feel better sooner and can prevent complications.

## What can trigger or worsen mastitis

- Oversupply or sudden changes in feeding or pumping
- Pumping to “empty” every time
- Overuse of Haakaa catch cups
- Heat packs and firm or deep breast massage
- Tight or under-wired bras that restrict lymph flow
- Stress, poor sleep and rapid weaning

## How we treat mastitis at All for One

Your session begins with a calm, thorough assessment of your symptoms, feeding pattern and goals. Treatment may include:

**Therapeutic ultrasound**
Targets inflammation and congestion to improve comfort, often with relief within 24–48 hours when combined with home care.

**Gentle lymphatic drainage**
Light, sweeping strokes toward the armpit to support fluid movement. We avoid deep or painful breast massage.

**Upper back support and mobility**
Targeted thoracic mobility, postural cues and gentle strength work to help you find a comfortable, sustainable feeding posture and reduce strain through the neck and shoulders.

**A clear recovery plan**
Simple home steps for cooling, rest and hydration, feeding rhythm guidance, and a check-in timeline so you know what to expect and when to escalate.

**Collaborative care**
If bacterial mastitis is suspected we’ll refer promptly to your GP. We can also connect you with a trusted Lactation Consultant.

*Need bra support too? We refer to local bra-fitting consultants for supportive, non-restrictive options that promote comfort and healthy lymph flow.*

## What to do at home

**Helpful**

- Cool compresses between feeds to reduce heat and swelling
- Rest, fluids and nourishing meals
- Continue feeding or expressing from both breasts as tolerated
- Supportive, non-restrictive bra

**Avoid**

- Heat packs on the breast
- Epsom salt soaks, castor oil or vibrating massagers
- Deep or firm breast massage to “unblock”
- Extra pumping to empty unless advised by a professional

## Fees, rebates and locations

- Sessions with a Women’s Health Physiotherapist
- Private health rebates may apply
- Appointments in **Yarraville** and **Hampton East**
- **Same-day appointments available**

## FAQs

**Do I need antibiotics?**
Not always. Many cases begin as inflammation. Your physio will assess and refer to your GP if antibiotics are indicated.

**Is ultrasound safe while breastfeeding?**
Yes. Therapeutic ultrasound used by trained physiotherapists is considered safe and can assist with symptom relief.

**Can I keep breastfeeding?**
In most cases yes. We’ll help you adjust positions and rhythm to support recovery while protecting supply.

**How quickly will I feel better?**
Many people feel some relief after the first session, with steady improvement over 24–48 hours when home care is followed.

**Do you help with recurrent mastitis?**
Yes. We look for drivers such as oversupply, feeding pattern, stress and bra fit, then create a plan to reduce flare-ups.

**Ready for fast relief?**
