# Exercising During Pregnancy: What the Evidence Tells Us

Pregnancy is a time of incredible change—physically, emotionally, and in how we relate to our bodies. At All for One, we believe movement during this season should feel empowering, nourishing, and safe—not uncertain or overwhelming.

Whether you’re preparing to conceive, moving through pregnancy, or navigating life postnatally, staying active with the right support can positively impact not just how you feel day to day, but your long-term health and recovery.

Here’s what the evidence—and our experience—says about exercise during pregnancy.

## Why Move During Pregnancy?

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) recommends that women aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week during pregnancy. And that’s not just a number—there’s strong evidence that regular, thoughtful movement supports:

### Maternal Health Benefits

**Mental Wellbeing**
Exercise is a powerful tool in managing stress, anxiety and low mood during pregnancy. Moving regularly helps regulate hormones, release endorphins, and foster a greater sense of calm and clarity.

**Strength, Stamina & Birth Preparation**
Building strength and endurance can help you feel more capable throughout pregnancy—and better prepared for labour. Studies show improved fitness may contribute to shorter labour durations and reduce the likelihood of interventions.

**Reduced Risk of Complications**
Regular physical activity is associated with lower rates of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and excessive weight gain.

**Easier Recovery Postpartum**
Staying active helps maintain muscle tone, support core integrity, and improve circulation—all of which can ease postpartum recovery and reduce the risk of long-term complications.

### Benefits for Baby

The benefits of movement don’t stop with you—they extend to your baby, too. Emerging research suggests that regular prenatal exercise can positively impact:

- **Fetal heart health and placental function**, supporting optimal oxygen and nutrient delivery
- **Birth weight regulation**, reducing the risk of both low and high birth weight
- **Neurodevelopmental outcomes**, with some studies linking maternal activity to improved cognitive and motor development
- **Labour outcomes**, with higher maternal fitness associated with reduced need for interventions and improved newborn Apgar scores

In short, exercising during pregnancy doesn’t just help you feel stronger and more supported—it helps create a healthier environment for your baby, both before and after birth.

## The Role of Core & Pelvic Floor Strength

Targeted core work during pregnancy can help reduce diastasis recti abdominis (DRAM) and supports pelvic stability. A strong, well-coordinated core can also lead to a more efficient second stage of labour by improving control and support during pushing, and potentially reducing the need for interventions.

At All for One, we incorporate pelvic floor and breathing coordination into our prenatal programs to help you feel more connected and confident as your body changes.
