As we welcome on board our Acupuncturist Dr Ivana Low (TCM) to the team, here are the answers
to some burning questions you may have about acupuncture, how it works and what concerns and
conditions it could help you with.

What is acupuncture and what does it do?

Acupuncture is a modality of Chinese Medicine used and developed over thousands of years and
tested for its efficacy and treatment relevance in clinic. It is traditionally explained in terms of
balancing Yin and Yang and restoring flow to the energy channels of the body which responds to
various organ systems. Modern scientific understanding interprets acupuncture effects through
 various physiological mechanisms:

1. Activation of the Central Nervous System:
The insertion of acupuncture needles activates sensory receptors in the skin and muscles.
This information is then transmitted to the central nervous system (spinal cord and brain),
influencing the release of various neurotransmitters and hormones which include
endorphins, modulating pain signals and inflammatory cytokines.

2. Regulation of the Autonomic Nervous System:
Acupuncture has been shown to influence the autonomic nervous system, which controls
involuntary bodily functions such as heart rate, digestion, and respiratory rate. This can
contribute to the overall balance of the body's physiological processes.

3. Improves blood flow and microcirculation:
Acupuncture may enhance blood flow and improve microcirculation at the site of needle
insertion. This improved circulation can contribute to tissue healing and the resolution of
 various health issues.
